Marco Gangl is the new chef at the Restaurant Himmelreich. His predecessor cooked three Gault&Millau toques in the restaurant, which opened in 2019 in a 300-year-old Ausgedingehof (little cottage of estate reserved for use by parents) in Zaußenberg am Wagram in Lower Austria. Gangl, a 29-year-old from West Styria, wants to continue on this high-quality path. He was previously head chef at Heurigenhof Bründlmayer and worked at Landhaus Bacher, both in Lower Austria, for two and a half years. However, his main source of inspiration is the Swedish three-star Frantzén, where he worked for a few months in 2021. From this restaurant, which is currently the sixth best in the world, Gangl brought home a fascination for good basic products whose originality is to be preserved and emphasised during preparation. Origin and seasonality also play a major role. Fruit, vegetables and meat from regional farmers, fish from Austrian waters and home-grown herbs will be used. "From this I will cook a large and a small menu, in which the meat will often be something like the best supporting actor. Now I'm definitely still very busy getting everything on track as well as possible so that we can start on time," explains the new chef from Himmelreich. On time means on Friday, 17 June. From then on, the restaurant will be open from 12 noon to midnight on Fridays to Mondays. Reservations are strongly recommended because of the limited seating.

Josef Fritz again provides a well-stocked wine list with his Roter and Grüner Veltliners together with the Naturals of his son Johannes and wines from friendly Austrian colleagues. "It is important to me to underline Marco's kitchen line with my wines. In any case, I'm really looking forward to coming to his place," says the winemaker. So it is likely that the patron will often be found in the Himmelreich. By the way, innovative young chefs from Marco Gangl's large international circle of friends will also be guests and will wield the wooden spoon together with him: "I want to surprise my guests every day and regularly organise exciting kitchen happenings with my friends. That's just fun!"

Himmelreich Restaurant. In 2017, winemaker Josef Fritz acquired a 300-year-old Ausgedingehof in the direct vicinity of the winery in Zaußenberg am Wagram, right next to the cru Ried Himmelreich, which gives the winery its name. After restoring it with great respect for the old walls, he opened the restaurant Josefs Himmelsreich together with Josef Kellner and Jasmin Wieland. In spring, the tenant couple withdrew for family reasons, and the new tenant and chef is 29-year-old Marco Gangl from West Styria. His cuisine is regional and seasonal with a focus on top quality basic products. The restaurant and the guest garden in the picturesque inner courtyard each have 24 seats. restaurant-himmelreich.at
