The first time was in 2010: Hans Tschida got dressed up, boarded a plane to London, and brought the world-renowned Sweet Winemaker of the Year award back home to the Seewinkel around Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. At the time, it would never have occurred to him that he would make this journey again, year after year. And yet in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and now also in 2024, the co-chairmen of the International Wine Challenge (IWC) have awarded him the coveted title. With this year, for an unbeatable tenth time! To become Sweet Winemaker of the Year, you need a decent number of IWC medals. This year nine gold and seven silver medals were awarded to Hans Tschida's outstanding sweet wines from Illmitz, as well as the Austrian Sweet Wine Trophy for his 2004 Sämling 88 Trockenbeerenauslese. The award ceremony took place on 9 July as part of the IWC gala evening at The Oval in London.
"Making great sweet wines requires patience, talent, passion and no little expertise. Hans Tschida has all four in abundance, which is why he is such an ouststanding talent, proving year after that he is one of the world’s best", Tim Atkin MW, Co-Chairman of the IWC, paid tribute to the award winner from the Neusiedlersee wine-producing region in Burgenland. Hans Tschida, who runs the winery together with his daughter Daniela, was honored: "It's always a nail-biter whether you'll actually be called up on stage. And when I am, my heart pounds and I can scarcely believe it. I am overwhelmed! A big thanks as well to my family for doing it together again!"
Gold at Decanter too! 96 points and a gold medal were given to Tschida’s 2021 Gelber Muskateller Trockenbeerenauslese at the Decanter World Wine Awards, making it Austria's highest-rated sweet wine this year. There was also gold for the 2020 Sämling 88 Ried Lüss DAC Reserve Seewinkel Trockenbeerenauslese and the 2020 Sämling 88 Beerenauslese, as well as a further four silver medals. The British Decanter magazine, which international greats such as Fiona Beckett, Tim Atkin and Stephen Brook write for, presents the World Wine Awards annually. It is published monthly in 90 countries worldwide, and is considered among the leading international wine media.
Two-time state winner in Burgenland. Hans Tschida can also rejoice over two top-rated wines in his native Burgenland. His 2023 Muskat Ottonel Auslese was chosen as the state winner in the "fruchtsüß" (medium sweet) category, while his 2021 Gelber Muskateller Trockenbeerenauslese was selected as the winner in the "edelsüß" (sweet) category. The award ceremony took place in the festive ballroom of Schloss Esterhazy in Eisenstadt, Burgenland.
The International Wine Challenge. At this year's 40th IWC, medals were awarded to wineries in 38 countries by over 500 IWC jury members including Masters of Wine, international wine producers, wine distributors, and trade journalists. Six co-chairs presided over the jury: Tim Atkin MW, Sam Caporn MW, Oz Clarke, Dr. Jamie Goode, Peter McCombie MW, and Helen McGinn. internationalwinechallenge.com
The Angerhof Tschida estate. Hans Tschida cultivates thirty hectares of vineyards together with his family in Burgenland's Seewinkel region in eastern Austria. Lake Neusiedl, with its particular microclimate, mineral salty and sandy soils, light gravel, and dark black chernozem shapes the Muskat Ottonels, Chardonnays, Welschrieslings, Gelber Muskatellers, Grüner Veltliners, Sämlings and red wines of this family-owned winery. They are characterized by uniquely balanced styles and varietal typicity. "Sweet wine, in perfection" is the winery's motto. angerhof-tschida.at
