Elisabeth Rücker – Austrian Wine Discovery

Austrian Wine Discovery

Winemaker Elisabeth Rücker is on her way to the big leagues. Her wines are made with honest, straightforward craftsmanship and are just now being discovered by Austria’s top sommeliers. In March, this native of Austria’s Weinviertel region will be exhibiting at the ProWein trade fair in Germany.

Elisabeth Rücker has been producing her own line of wine under the "Elisabeth Wines" name since 2008. In 2019 she will take over the family winery in Unterretzbach, northern Lower Austria, and bring everything together. "As a graduate sommelier and following my wine management studies and five years of sales work for the Wein & Co chain, I feel up to the big task. By then, I will also have an organic certification and can really get things going." The Weinviertel (wine quarter) vintner, who has been responsible for the cellar at her parents’ winery for nine years, looks forward to her time as the company’s general manager. She has been making a name for herself for some years now with her "Elisabeth wines", which are on the wine list in such prestigious Austrian establishments as the Hospiz Alm am Arlberg, the Wild21erin in Innsbruck, and the Angerer Alm in St. Johann in Tirol, as well as in well-known restaurants in Switzerland and Germany.

"Elisabeth Rücker is a young, dynamic talent. Her wines are straightforward, classic with just the right amount of freshness, and yet they have depth. She gets what nature offers into the glass. Her labels are small works of art expressing her joy in winemaking. Elisabeth Rücker impresses", says Annemarie Foidl, owner of the Angerer Alm and President of the Sommelier Union of Austria, who is clearly impressed by the young winemaker.

Abroad & at ProWein. Elisabeth Wines are exported to Switzerland and Germany and are found there in an increasing number of wine shops, hotels and restaurants. This is just one of the reasons for participating in important trade fairs such as the upcoming ProWein in Düsseldorf, Germany in March. Elisabeth Rücker will be pouring her wines in Hall 17 at stand number C01C among the Junge Wild Winzern (young, wild vintners).

And when the most important wine experts in the world arrive in Vienna in May for the European Sommelier Championship, Elisabeth Rücker will also be among the winemakers presenting their wines in the vinophile competition.

Elisabeth’s Philosophy. Elisabeth Rücker concentrates on the cycles of nature, which is why organic land management is essential for her as a basis for "good wines". Looking further into the future, she sees herself working biodynamically.

Asian wisdom also influences this winemaker. She is convinced that the five elements of fire, water, earth, wood and metal from Chinese teachings have their own effects on the wine. She pays attention to these effects and relates to them in her work.

Since all the Rücker wines will go exclusively through her hands in the future, the vineyard will retain its current size. This winemaker is only striving for growth in quality.

Elisabeth’s Winery & the Rücker Winery. Elisabeth Rücker, working together with her father, is converting her vineyards and those of her family (a total of 21 hectares) to organic agriculture. She has been responsible for eight hectares since 2008 and has been bottling wines under her own label. Her parents' vineyards cover thirteen hectares, which will be handed over to her in 2019. Rücker’s most important single site vineyards are called Innere Bergen and Halblehen.

Elisabeth’s Varieties. 60% Grüner Veltliner, 10% Riesling, 15% Chardonnay, 15% Zweigelt, with the rest divided between Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Junge Wilde Winzer. Elisabeth Rücker's move to the forefront made her a member of the Austrian "Junge Wilde Winzer" association in 2012, where she has been since the very beginning, and she remains the only woman flying their flag. Together with this innovative group, she is intensifying her marketing activities and participating in events and trade fairs.
