Reflections on the future of Austrian wine culture: “Where do you go to, my lovely …?” Armin Tement, Roland Velich and Andreas Wickhoff invite you to reflect on the individual character of Austria’s wine regions and the diversity of local winemaking in its cultural essence, and to share your thoughts on these topics.

Austria—a fine, small wine-producing country with a rich history.  Shaped by empire and upheaval, by a sense of order and individualism, Austrian wine continues to this day to navigate the tension between historical and contemporary, political and cultural developments.

What really defines Austrian wine at its source? It is the deliberate interplay between soil and vine. The quest for the essence of the terroir. Many winegrowers are committed to this terroir with uncompromising dedication—and translate it into the glass with artisanal precision: precise, unadulterated, distinctive.

Yet where independence flourishes, friction arises. With regulations. With expectations. With traditions.

The desire to take terroir and grape variety seriously often leads to conflicts with the law in one’s own country—whilst it is precisely this approach, and the wines it produces, that spark international enthusiasm.

Between regulation and freedom, origin and vision, a discourse emerges that extends far beyond the glass. An exploration of origin and ethos. A story of conflict and fascination. A debate—told through three wines.
