From the outside, it may look routine for sweet wine vintner Hans Tschida from Illmitz in Burgenland, Austria, to board a plane to London to receive this prestigious trophy. Not at all. "It's exciting all over again, every time. After all, we also approach our vintage fresh every year when making the wine, and we really put our backs into it. That's why every single award is a huge pleasure and the Sweet Winemaker Award is a real highlight, even for the ninth time.", says the beaming best sweet wine maker in the world. Becoming Sweet Winemaker of the Year requires winning a decent number of medals. This year, five gold and eight silver medals were awarded to Hans Tschida's outstanding sweet wines, as well as the Austrian Sweet Chardonnay Trophy for his 2021 Chardonnay Beerenauslese. The award ceremony took place on July 4th during the IWC Gala Evening at the Hurlingham Club in London. No one else in the world has ever been named Sweet Winemaker of the Year as often as Hans Tschida.
"Consistency is often underrated in the wine world. To achieve this award for the ninth time, producing sweet wines of such impressive quality, is a remarkable achievement. Hans is a world class winemaker who deserves his accolades.", said Tim Atkin MW, co-chairman of the IWC, in homage to the award winner from the Neusiedlersee winemaking region in Burgenland.
Best in Show also from Decanter. 97 out of 100 points and the Best in Show medal were recently awarded to Tschida's single-site vineyard 2021 Muskat Ottonel at the Decanter World Wine Awards. The British magazine Decanter, which international greats such as Michael Broadbent, Jancis Robinson and Steven Spurrier write for, presents the World Wine Awards annually. It is published monthly in 90 countries worldwide and is regarded as one of the leading international wine media.
The International Wine Challenge.
