Together! Demeter & respekt-BIODYN
Together!
The biodynamic winemakers' associations Demeter and respekt-BIODYN are increasingly cooperating and gaining more and more significance together in the wine market. They already cultivate a total of three percent of the total vineyard area of Austria, and just under one percent in Germany. Now they invited to a joint tasting with an international audience of experts.

The biodynamic wine world is growing. From 2013 to 2019, the number of Demeter-certified wineries worldwide increased from 616 to 884, and that of respekt wineries from 15 to 23. Together they cultivate a total vineyard area of more than 22,000 hectares, and the trend is rising. In terms of domestic vineyard area, Austria is in first place with a biodynamic share of three percent, followed by Switzerland, Great Britain, France, and Germany. These two certifying winemakers' associations, Demeter and respekt-BIODYN, are pleased with their group victory, and after a somewhat bumpy start in respekt’s founding phase they now meet very amicably and work closely together. "After all, it would be unwise to reinvent the wheel. Each of the two groups has its strengths, from which everyone benefits. And ultimately we want the same thing, healthy viniculture and outstanding wines", says Demeter group spokesman Niki Moser. And from respekt chairman Michael Goëss-Enzenberg: "We use, for example, the Demeter basic courses for our new members, and Demeter participates in high-profile respekt projects. That's always a win-win situation."
The most recent example of this was an international online wine tasting entitled "A Message in a Biodynamic Bottle - Two Associations, Twelve Varied Interpretations of Winemaking", which was held at the end of May in lieu of the cancelled VieVinum wine trade fair. It was led by Monty Waldin, a renowned biodynamics expert from the UK, who asked in-depth questions of each of the six Demeter & respekt winemakers involved, focusing on their individual interpretations of biodynamics and the farm as an organism. The carefully selected wines, which all tasting guests had received via DHL, were equally ready to speak and answer questions, and once again proved the excellence and independence of their class. For all those interested, video of the tasting is available for download on the respekt YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/respekt-YOUTUBE. A listing of the wines tasted is found on page 3 in the attached pdf.
Demeter Austria. The guidelines for biodynamic agriculture, based on the Agricultural Course of anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner, have existed for just under a hundred years. The first three Demeter wineries were certified in 1999, and today around 80 winegrowers work according to their guidelines, many of them utilizing mixed farming. They cultivate their vineyards as living farm organisms - individually adapted to the respective terroirs, and covering a total area of around 800 hectares. The spokesman for this winemakers' group is Niki Moser of the Sepp Moser estate. www.demeter.at/wein
respekt-BIODYN. This association is based in Austria and as of 2021 has twenty-five members in Germany, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. It was founded in 2007 with the aim of striving together for ever greater quality and individuality in wine. Michael Goëss-Enzenberg of the South Tyrolean Manincor estate heads the association as chairman, his deputy is the Kamptal winemaker Fred Loimer. respekt-BIODYN has established itself internationally in recent years alongside Demeter and Biodyvin as an important and driving force in biodynamic viniculture. In total, respekt members cultivate an area of about 850 hectares. www.respekt-biodyn.bio
